Phone.com Review
- #2 Choice for The Best SOHO and Small Office Plans
- Rated one of the Best Value Plans
- Offers a Free Trial
The review for Phone.com has been a long time coming and I've received more requests for this review than any of the other virtual pbx companies.
I've called Phone.com on multiple occasions to see how their response rate would be and I've never waited more than 30 seconds to talk to someone - good job!! Additionally, the service and sales representatives have been able to answer all of my questions without having to consult with someone else first!!
Phone.com has some great features and take a look at their pricing!

Phone.com Setting up the Account
Creating the Phone.com account was easy and they provide a free month of service so you can test the system out to see if you like it.
Setting up the account seemed easy, they provide you with a wizard to get you started. The wizard is straight forward and very simply. Great for technophobes!!
Beyond the basics, setup can be confusing especially if you haven't worked with virtual pbx systems before. There were several changes that I made that either would work correctly or that I just couldn't figure out on my own. Proper configuration can be attained; however, you will have to work for it.
Phone.com Pros:
- They have included many features with each of the plans
- Prices are reasonable
- Features are explained well on the site
- Customer service is prompt and knowledgeable
- Unlimited Extensions
- Voicemail to Text feature is awesome!!
Phone.com Cons:
- Some key features are missing like auto-attendant, call screening and call blocking
- Configuration can be confusing
- Queuing is just a hunt group
Phone.com Special Features
Call Handling Rules
For Phone.com call handling adds a few more features than is typical with most companies. While you can still set after-hours rules you can also route calls from select individuals to any number you choose regardless of the time of day the call comes in. This is a great way for friends, family and co-workers to reach you even after the office has "closed".
Call Queue
While Phone.com offers a call queuing feature it is not intelligent like those provided at RingCentral and VirtualPBX. Callers entering a queue will be sent through a series of numbers until someone answers the call. While this system would be good for a small office where there isn't a heavy call volume, I do not recommend it for large call centers. To find out more about call queues you can visit this page.
Global Numbers
Have clients in other countries and don't want them to pay long distance calls? Phone.com allows you to create local phone numbers in foreign countries so that callers can dial those numbers directly and be connected to you. It's a local call for them and flat monthly rate for you!
Text to Greeting
Phone.com allows you to customize your greeting by using text! While this may not be the most beneficial feature, I'm sure some people will enjoy it a lot. You can add a type written greeting to you account that will then be converted to speech by a voice synthesizer. Phone.com also allows you to add pre-canned noises to the greeting like clapping, a dog barking, laughing, etc.
When I tested out this feature I had selected the voice I wanted; however, it didn't work. I selected Princess as the voice type, but when I saved it the voice came across as a middle aged man - different than the sample I was provided. When I called support about this issue I was told that there was a bug in the system that was being worked on and that it would be resolved within a few days. For the record, today is 4/3/2009.
Text Voicemail
Want your voicemail converted to text? Phone.com can help. For 25 cents per message, Phone.com can convert your messages to text and email them to you to read! This is a great option for people in meetings who can't take the time to listen to a message but can take a quick peek! At 25 cents a message, this is the cheapest I've seen this feature.
Professional Phone Greetings
Phone.com does offer professional recordings for your greetings if you need it and prices for that service start at $60 and then increase based on your needs. It appears that they have outsourced this portion of the business to audiproductionstore.com and repackaged it to integrate with the Phone.com service.
